Aw man, this shot fills me with such joy. The thumbs up and the reassuring "hang in there" from his fellow police officers. He'll be a hero to them forever (even though he didn't do anything). Although, having said that, Arquette has said that in Scream 4 people still don't take him seriously, even though he is now the sheriff of Woodsboro. Will be interesting to see how that pans out. I wonder if they would've told him about Tatum yet? :(
(yes, I like talking about these characters as real people, haven't you noticed yet?)
I love fake news reports in movies. I just do. I can't tell you why! And this one from Gale, set to the coos of Moby's "Fresh Cool Hive" (above) feels like an apt ending to Scream. Gale's line "It all began with the scream of a 911" may not be accurate, but it's a great news line.
"Hi, this is Gale Weathers with an exclusive, eye-witness account of this amazing breaking story. Several more local teens a dead, bringing to an end the harrowing mystery of the mass killings that have terrified this peaceful community like the plot of some scary movie. It all began with the scream of a 911 and ended in a bloodbath that has rocked the town of Woodsboro. All played out here in this peaceful farmhouse, far away from the crimes and sirens of the larger cities that its residents had fled."
And with that Gale tells her newly hired cameraman "Okay, let's take it from the top. This my big shot. Move it!" and we fade to black. Love that closing line. She's all about the business. And thus brings about the end to our scene by scene dissection of Wes Craven's Scream. Before we get into Scream 2, we have a brief credits/outro piece to get through so don't think we're off the hook just yet!

Kudos. Great little scene, indeed.
I think she's saying "It all began with a scream OVER 911" as in over the phone.
I always got the impression that, at this point, Dewey doesn't know that Tatum's dead. I mean, when he's being loaded into the ambulance, he mutters "sorry, Gale."
You'd think that if he knew Tatum was dead, it'd be "sorry, Tatum." or maybe "sorry, mom." for failing to protect his little sister.
Or maybe when he was searching the house, he popped his head in the garage and saw. :( Sad.
