Scream to Scream, Scene by Scene: SCENE 32 of Scream (1:37:38-1:39:36)

In this project I attempt to review the entire Scream trilogy scene by scene in chronological order. Heavy spoilers and gore throughout!

SCENE 32
Length: 1min 58secs
Primary Characters: Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, Randy Meeks & Billy Loomis
Pop Culture References:
  • None

How about that shot! So wonderfully composed. It actually almost looks like a painting or a shot from some amazing Bjork video.

Wes, Kevin and co aren't done with the jokes about horror movie cliches just yet.

I like how Randy actually believes the reason he is still alive is because he's a virgin. Poor, blessed Randy! Your virginity was your saviour... or, Billy was just a crap shot and thought he'd killed you when he really hadn't. If Stu had've been the one shooting Randy he would have made sure, since he's a firm believer in the rule ("you gave it up, now you gotta die. those are the rules.")

"Say hello to your mother!"

In the grand scheme of things, strangulation would have hardly been the most rousing of deaths for Sidney Prescott, the girl who destroyed Billy's life, but if it works it works. Alas, it doesn't work.

And that's why Sidney comes out on top (figuratively speaking); she's not afraid to dig her fingers inside a stab wound! Totally gross.

I'm so glad they gave Gale this moment, can I just say that? They risked turning her into a joke after the "it works better with the safety on" bit, but Gale getting her revenge and saving the life of Sidney was such a perfect play on the filmmakers behalf. It also works really well for the sequel ("be careful, she saved our lives") to have had her do this.

I also just like imagining if this were real life and someone from, say, Entertainment Tonight having to shoot a serial killer after he'd just murdered your cameraman and a bunch of innocent teenagers (plus, you must've thought, the local deputy that you had a crush on!) It'd be the most fascinating part of the whole ordeal!

Meanwhile, as I was screencapping this I had to go into super slow motion to capture that moment where the sparks shoot from the gun, but I also managed to get this shot. Look at the bullet casing fly!

Her face looks funny, too.

Not corn syrup.

I love the little "It's okay" assurance that Sidney gives Gale, who is quite clearly shocked at what she was just able to do.

"Guess I remembered the safety that time, you bastard."

I like how Randy's all "Gale Weathers!!!!" on his face. "Gale Weathers just shot Billy!!!!"

"Careful. This the moment when the supposedly dead killer comes back to life for one last scare."

"Not in my movie."

Fuck yeah! Sorry, this moment is so... fist-pumpy!

These shots must be so weird to film as an actor. Being asked to scream on cue at the sound of a loud noise just feels so comical to me and I'm sure they laughed a lot doing this. Sometimes the most serious of films make for the most laugh-filled sets, apparently.

And the scene ends with Gale looking out over the carnage that has just unfolded around her, wondering how she came to be there, how she was able to survive... and what will it do for her book sales.

Good stuff. I loved the end, too. Would have been so simple for Syd to laugh off the idea of Billy jumping back to life. So much better than she doesn't leave it open as even a mere possibility.

Lmao "... and what it will do for her booksales." Well done.
