Red State
Dir. Kevin Smith
Year: 2011
Aus Rating: MA15+
Running Time: 88mins
As poster boy for the American independent cinema movement of the 1990s, Kevin Smith has found himself lost and seemingly unmotivated amidst the film landscape in recent years. He has churned out a sequel to his beloved Clerks and made the resoundingly lead-footed mainstream wannabe Cop Out, but with Red State Smith has returned to his indie roots, resulting in some mixed returns. It’s certainly an ambitious film and, unlike many of his recent films, is can actually be labelled as competently made, but it still suffers from Smith’s usual bag of frustrating tricks.
Let me just say that there are two jokes about Melissa Leo's wig in there. I think I restrained myself quite well.
