It should come as no surprise after viewing The Special Relationship that it was originally produced for America’s esteemed HBO. The success of prior Peter Morgan-written films like The Queen and Frost/Nixon are surely what prompted a theatrical release in Australia, but it becomes quickly obvious that television was the correct domain for this rather flat retelling of the “special relationship” between US President Bill Clinton and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair between the years of 1993 to 2001.I go on to discuss how Michael Sheen needs to give up this whole Tony Blair thing and how Hope Davis is the best thing about the movie. I don't want to give Peter Morgan any ideas though because haven't we all had enough of this very polite sub-sub-sub genre of political biopics written by Peter Morgan? I think so!

Hope Davis *was* the best thing about the movie. When she asks him how she looks before she exits the car? Yeah that broke my heart.
