What is it with Nicole Kidman landing the hot directors after their big breakouts for her films? She has appeared in films directed by Jonathan Glazer (Birth after his debut with Sexy Beast), Noah Baumbach (Margot at the Wedding after The Squid and the Whale), Steven Shainberg (Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus after Secretary), Alejandro Amenábar (The Others after Open Your Eyes) and so on. Well, she's snagged another one for The Danish Girl, a new film that stars Kidman as the first ever transgendered person, Einar Wegener.
Variety is reporting that Tomas Alfredson will direct The Danish Girl. Alfredson hit it big last year with his Swedish vampire film Let the Right One In. He was supposed to adapt a John le Carre novel, but will make this first instead. Unfortunately Charlize Theron has pulled out.
I am fairly certain that the combination of Kidman and Alfredson will cause a rupture in the space-time continuum because Kidman haters and arty fanboys are generally one in the same. How on Earth will the cool crowd manage to console themselves knowing that Alfredson is directing a movie starring (and produced by) Kidman? I'm sure there'll be many "she looks like she walked off of the set of Let the Right One In!" re botox and then they won't actually go see the movie. Because that's what internet poseurs do. Critique the publicity stills and forget about the good things that the filmmakers have done before.
