In anticipation for my trip to New York City I will be counting down with some of my NYC movies (and even some that I don't like just for a change of pace). Hope you all enjoy.
I actually don't too much care for Midnight Cowboy. There's no denying that it has dated horrifically, but as a piece of cinema from that era is stands out. The only X-rated film to ever win a Best Picture Academy Award, and as one of the more prominent films to document the seedy Times Square of the '60s and '70s. Filled with porn cinemas and porn shops and porn everything plus hookers on every corner and rubbish clogging the gutters. It's not exactly the sort of fantasy picture your mind brings up when thinking of the area, but it's fascinating nonetheless.
As a film though I just can't get into it. I'm not one of Dustin Hoffman's fans and don't like him here as the grotty Ritzo and Jon Voight has always been a bit vague. I guess I just don't care about the bond these two form - queer or not - because they two are such unlikable characters - part of the movie's point, I'm sure - and remains, to me, nothing more than a historical artifact.
