This Week on Australian Screens

Cinema Releases for the Week 10/12/08

City of Ember - I actually want to see this movie by Gil Kenan (Monster House), which stars Saiorse Ronan, Bill Murray and Tim Robbins. Mostly for the production design, mind you, but...

Twilight - I've never read the books, never read any of the marketing piece (as prevalent as they may be) and I never even watched star Kristen Stewart on Letterman. Clearly I'm overly excited for this movie!

DVD Releases for the Week 10/12/08

And When Did You Last See Your Father? - What a terrible title. Colin Firth and Jim Broadbent star.

Camp Rock - I saw about twenty seconds of this recently on TV. It was terrible.

The Dark Knight - Yawn. These poor direct-to-DVD movies about B-grade superheroes are becoming so frequent. Where are the Elektras and the Catwomans to set the genre right?!?

How About You - Another one of those quaint looks-like-it-was-made-for-TV British movies that pop up all the time. Stars Vanessa Redgrave, Imelda Staunton, Brenda Fricker and Hayley Atwell.

Open Season 2 - There was an Open Season 1?

TV Screenings for the Week 11/12/08

12/12/08, Bondi Tsunami (2004), SBS, 12.00AM - Aussie movie about a group of Asian surfers going on a road trip.

13/12/08, Clash of the Titans (1981), C9, 3.00PM - I miss the '80s (and I was barely even around during them!)

13/12/08, Holiday Inn (1942), ABC2, 10.00PM - If you want to see where "White Christmas" (an Oscar winner for Best Original Song as well as a perennial carol) comes from, try this movie. I wasn't quite as taken with it when I watched it on Christmas day last year, but there's no denying it's a favourite of many.

13/12/08, The Pledge (2001), C9, 11.30PM - Sean Penn directs Jack Nicholson. God, Into the Wild was a load of crap, wasn't it?

15/12/08, Celebrity: Dominic Dunne (2008), ABC1, 8.30PM - This Australian documentary on Vanity Fair reporter Dominic Dunne was screened theatrically earlier this year, but is already screening on TV, which is great news considering I so wanted to see it. ABC1 is also planning on screening Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts at some point, too.
