2007 Screening Schedule for 2008

In the coming months Australia will be getting the last wave of American 2007 films. Some are Oscar contenders and some wanted to be Oscar contenders. Of course, there will be titles from 2007 streaming to our end of the world around this time in 2009 so we'll never get everything within a perfect timeframe, but as these things go we've actually gotten it pretty good this past year. I've actually been able to discuss the majority of the Oscar movies during the campaign season and most of the major contenders will have been released by ceremony night. So snaps for that.

But there's always issues. Hello we're still waiting for The Painted Veil to be released. You know, the one with Ed Norton, Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber. Watts and Schreiber hooked up and had a child in the amount of time it's taken that movie to be released. Hell, they could have a whole gang of them and it still will not have been released. The 2007 film most likely to suffer the same fate appears to be William Friedkin's Bug; Released in the USA in May, screened at MIFF in July, yet still no word on a release date. I'm officially worried. Although now that I'm researching The Lookout doesn't have a release yet either and that was released in March, American time! Yikes. Apparently movies like Bug and The Lookout are going direct-to-DVD. Well, at least that's something!

Anyway, here is a rundown of the dates I'll be paying attention to. I most definitely won't be seeing them all theatricall - I personally can't be bothered spending $14 for Lars and the Real Girl, ya know?

All dates are, unfortunately, subject to change.

Jan 10
American Gangster

Jan 17
The Kite Runner
Lust, Caution

Jan 24
3:10 to Yuma
Charlie Wilson's War
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Feb 7
There Will Be Blood

Feb 14
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Things We Lost in the Fire

Feb 21
Margot at the Wedding
We Own the Night

Mar 27
Gone Baby Gone

TBA (Does anybody have info on these titles? It'd be greatly appreciated)
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
I'm a Cyborg But That's Okay
In the Valley of Elah
Lars and the Real Girl
The Savages
Smiley Face
Starting out in the Evening

Titles I still need to see on DVD, either available now or over the coming months - Across the Universe, Boxing Day, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Brave One, Bug*, Eastern Promises, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Gabriel, Inside Paris, The Lookout*, A Mighty Heart, Meet the Robinsons, The Nakesake, Offside, Red Road Romance & Cigarettes*, Sicko, The Singer, Year of the Dog* plus a selection of other films, documentaries and foreign films that I'm bound to come across in my travels.

* denotes Direct-to-DVD title

Ouch. Oh well, I guess that means I've saved the money I'd spend seeing them at the cinema. Still... it woulda been nice to see Bug at the cinema.
